JPEG works everywhere. WebP usually compresses smaller at the same quality, but flattens transparency onto white either way, since both formats are lossy here.
How this works
Your image is redrawn onto a canvas in your browser and re-encoded at a lower quality setting, which is what actually shrinks the file size. Lower quality means a smaller file but more visible compression artifacts — 60-80% is usually a good balance for photos.
